I've never fly fished. Can I still book a trip?
Absolutely — beginners are some of our favorite clients. We'll cover casting basics before we launch and coach you all day. Most first-timers hook fish. If you'd like a head start, book a casting session in Seattle before your float.
Do I need a fishing license?
Yes. Everyone fishing needs a valid Washington State freshwater fishing license, available online at
fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov or at most sporting goods stores. Day licenses are inexpensive — buy before your trip and bring proof.
What gear do I need to bring?
Just clothing and a license. Rods, reels, flies, leaders, and tippet are included, and loaner rain gear is available. Dress in layers, bring polarized sunglasses (they help you see fish and protect your eyes), sunscreen, and shoes that can get wet.
Where do we meet?
Meeting spots depend on which stretch we're floating — typically a boat launch between Cle Elum and the lower canyon, about 1.5–2 hours from Seattle on I-90. Exact location and time are confirmed when you book. Carpooling from Seattle can sometimes be arranged.
When is the best time to fish the Yakima?
There's no bad month, just different fishing. February–April brings skwala stoneflies and March Browns. Summer means big flows and hopper-dropper fishing through the canyon. September and October — flip-flop flows, October caddis, hungry fish — are arguably the best weeks of the year. Check the
fishing report for current conditions.
Can we keep fish?
No — the Yakima's wild trout fishery is catch-and-release, and we fish barbless hooks. That's both regulation on much of the river and our policy everywhere. It's why the fishing stays good.
What if the weather is bad?
Trout don't mind rain, and some of the best fishing happens under grey skies — we fish in most weather. If conditions become unsafe or unfishable (dangerous flows, lightning, extreme heat closures), we'll reschedule at no cost to you.
How many people fit in the boat?
The drift boat fishes two anglers comfortably, plus your guide on the oars. Got a bigger group? Contact us — we can coordinate additional boats with trusted fellow guides.
Should I tip my guide?
Tips are never required but always appreciated. Industry standard for a great day is 15–20% of the trip price.
How do payments work?
Requesting a date costs nothing. Once we confirm availability, a 50% deposit locks in your trip and the balance is due trip day — cash, check, or card. Cancellations 7+ days out are fully refunded.
